| Excerpt Title: A BODY TO DIE FOR |
"Look at me and tell me again," Jack said. "The truth this time." Anger and indignation slowly pulsed through Maddie. What right did he – a perfect stranger – have to question her feelings for Lamar? Did he think because she was mildly attracted to him that he could demand to know her every secret? "You want the truth?" she snapped. "That's all I've ever wanted." She stared into his eyes, her gaze unwavering. "Then here's the truth," she said in a calm, even voice. "Lamar means more to me than any man I'll ever know. I'll love him forever. And I could never...ever...do anything that would hurt him." She paused. "Are you satisfied?" "There's only one thing that will satisfy me," Jack murmured, his gaze skimming over her face to rest on her lips. "And what is that? Please tell me. I'd be happy to oblige." "This," Jack murmured. He grabbed her arms, his hands hot on her bare flesh, and pulled her against him. She drew in a sharp gasp, but the sound of the pulse pounding in her temples obliterated everything else. Jack lowered his head until his mouth was nearly on hers. "Lamar's gone, Maddie." He drew in a deep breath. "But I'm here. And God help me, I want you." |
